How To Block Spyware From Your PC

Spyware is designed to retrieve just about anything from your computer and send it back to its controller. Spyware has become an increasingly significant problem for many users of personal computers as it represents a real threat to security and privacy. Whilst Spyware removal software will scan a computer to detect and then remove infected files and programs it is surely better to block Spyware from being downloaded in the first place.

Personal Information Harvesting

Whilst Spyware can be used to monitor computer activity in a non-threatening manner it can have a darker side. It can intercept personal information including passwords, bank account numbers, and all user keystrokes. Nothing is left unobserved. Many programs will remove Spyware and Adware but not all of them remove every part of every file and within moments the computer can be reinfected. The nature of Spyware is that it becomes buried deep on the hard disc drive of the machine, concealing itself from the reach of many of the removal tools.

Because Spyware and Adware are often downloaded (unknowingly) with a piece of free software the user may find that by removing the Spyware or Adware the wanted piece of software becomes unusable. Essential files are often shared by the wanted and unwanted program and to remove one renders the other useless. Because so few people actually read the license terms and conditions they remain blissfully unaware that clicking 'I accept' effectively authorizes the download of all sorts of additional pieces of code to the ones they think they are getting. Some Spyware will gain access to a computer through a vulnerability in Internet Explorer; other pieces of this malicious code will be downloaded when the computer user simply clicks on a web browser advertisement.

Identity Theft

Of course the best way to stop Spyware being used to track your web movements and even from stealing your identity is to not download it in the first place. Only ever download from a site after having verified the terms included in the license agreement. Lurk on user forums to see if any problems have been highlighted. Buy software from reputable companies rather than relying on free downloads, which invariably have strings attached.

Blocking Spyware can be tricky. Whilst many computer users are aware of the threat posed by computer viruses there remains a lot of blissful ignorance. Experts appear to be agreed that the best way to block Spyware is to focus on how it works and the resources it uses and make them unavailable. Many advertising sites and sites known to circulate Spyware are being blocked by the security within Internet browsers. Software programs can also be obtained that will monitor attempts to infiltrate your computer. A total Spyware block is difficult to achieve because so much of what we download is actually required so the responsibility for blocking Spyware must remain with the computer user.
