The Tricks That Spyware Gets Up To On Your PC

Spyware is a piece of computer software that is surreptitiously installed on a personal computer for the express purpose of collecting information about the users, without their consent, and sending that information to the source controller. Spyware may be used simply to gather advertising intelligence or it may be deliberately planted for a more sinister purpose.

Spyware can download and install programs unbidden by the computer user; it can change browser settings, reset bookmarks, change wallpaper and generally take over the smooth operating of the machine.

Very often Spyware comes included in bundled shareware or other downloadable pieces of software including music tracks. Spyware does not infect other machines as a virus or worm would, so other computers are usually safe from infection from that particular machine.

Spyware Resources

Spyware is divided into two forms; one is less threatening than the other but can be just as annoying. Spyware conceals itself deep on the hard disk drive, never making its presence felt until its use of the computer's resources begins to impact the running of the machine. Adware on the other hand, whilst it is downloaded in a similar way to Spyware, makes no attempt to hide its presence. Having begun to gather intelligence about the computer user it will be used to present all manner of advertising banners and popups, usually at the most inappropriate times and with annoying persistence. It is much easier for a computer user to recognize an Adware infection simply because it is so visually apparent.

Whilst it is not in the Spyware writer's interest to damage your computer, there is high risk of damage occurring simply because of the nature of the software. It becomes embedded on the hard drive with tendrils of files spread throughout the file structure. It will hijack files that are shared by legitimate programs which makes it very difficult to remove without impacting the ability of those programs to run. Manual removal of Spyware is definitely a job for an expert personal computer technician as dabbling in this area can leave the computer damaged beyond repair.

Spyware causes a negative impact in a number of different ways. It compromises the computer user's privacy by gathering their personal information and distributing it to others. It can use a dial up modem to place premium rate calls to a number owned by the Spyware originator. It can interfere with the running of the legitimate programs stored on the hard drive and is notorious for impeding connectivity to the internet. Such is the threat of Spyware that many computer users have moved to non Windows platforms such as Linux or Macintosh as these appear to have less vulnerability to attack.

Spyware Hijack

Spyware is excellent at hijacking actions and events. It attacks affiliate networks and has been known to replace affiliate links with the Spyware operator's affiliate tag. It can redirect a web site request taking the user to either an advertisement site instead or, more dangerously, a clone site of the one they were expecting to visit. It is this type of hijacking that forms the basis of many online banking fraud scams.

Spyware can be incredibly difficult to remove. The nature of the way it installs itself means many hidden files can remain even after a disk clean up operation has been conducted and very often these hidden files can regenerate the Spyware software. To counteract this problem it is often necessary to employ the use of more than one removal tool and also to make regular scans of the hard drive to ensure that reinfection has not occurred.
